Strawberry Salsa Recipe
This Strawberry Salsa recipe is one of my absolute favorite things to eat when berries are in season. It's an unexpected blend of strawberries, cilantro, lime, jalapeno peppers, and red onion. The combination of sweet and spicy with a Mexican twist is simply dreamy. Serve it with chips, or use it as a topping for fish, shrimp, chicken, or tacos for a delicious addition to any spring or summer meal.
This recipe is best enjoyed in peak berry season! Local Farmer's Market South Carolina strawberries are ripe this time of year and it really doesn't get any better than fresh fruit. Strawberry season is one of my favorite times of the year because of delightful strawberry recipes like this one.
I love that this simple fruit salsa is made in just a few minutes with just five ingredients. The unexpected savory flavor profile plays so well with the sweet berries.
The strawberries look super festive and happy piled high on a table! Can't you just imagine this at a Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day party? You can make this ahead of time and even double it for a crowd.
Sure you could make regular salsa, but there is something bright and unexpected about a good fruit salsa. I've made some yummy ones over the year including Fresh Peach Salsa, Watermelon Salsa, and Mango Salsa but Strawberry Salsa just might be one of my favorites.

What is fruit salsa made of?
If you haven't made a strawberry salsa or fruit salsa at home yet, it's basically made with similar ingredients as traditional salsa, you just substitute the fruit for tomatoes. In this case, you'll need strawberries, cilantro, lime, red onion, and jalapeno peppers. You can prepare cooked fruit salsa, but this version is more of a pico de gallo.
Ingredients:
Here's an overview of what you'll need to make this Strawberry Salsa. Keep scrolling for the complete printable recipe.
- Strawberries: Look for flavorful ripe strawberries, but avoid overly soft ones. To prep, the berries, wash them but don't soak them. You'll want them to be nice and dry so you don't have any extra moisture in your salsa. Strawberries are packed with vitamin C, making them the perfect base for healthy fruit salsa.
- Red Onion: Red onion is a classic ingredient in regular and fruit salsa and really gives the salsa a savory bite. A small red onion will be perfect.
- Jalapeno Pepper: To make the jalapeno less spicy remove the seeds and inner white membrane. If you can't handle any heat, feel free to substitute a green pepper or red bell pepper for the jalapeno or even a poblano. I love the way the jalapeno flavor pairs with the berries.
- Cilantro: Fresh cilantro is a key ingredient in any salsa recipe. Use more or less depending on your taste. There is not good replacement if you want that classic Mexican taste.
- Lime Juice: Fresh lime is the best!
Instructions:
Here's an overview of how to make the Strawberry Salsa, keep scrolling for the detailed printable recipe.
- In a large bowl carefully toss together the chopped strawberries, red onion, jalapeno, cilantro, and lime.
- Add a touch of salt to taste.
- Serve immediately or the recipe will taste a bit better sitting in the fridge for 30 minutes or more so the flavors mix together.
- Serve with tortilla chips, quesadilla, tacos, or as a topping for fish or chicken.
Variations:
- Make it Minty: If you aren't a fan of cilantro, you can substitute fresh mint in the recipe. Basil would also be unexpected and delicious. Those would be the best fresh herbs to use.
- Mix the Berries or Fruit: You can also add other berries to this like blueberries, mango, or pineapple.
- Add Vegetables: A few vegetables you could mix in are corn, tomatoes, or cucumber.
- Use Green Onions: If red onions aren't your favorite, use chopped green onions.
- Make it Sweeter: If you are looking for a sweeter salsa, add a touch of honey.
- Make it Cheesy: To really have an interesting dish, add crumbled feta or goat cheese to the mix.
- Make it Dessert: Make this a dessert by serving it with cinnamon chips. To make them, start with cut tortillas. Brush them with olive oil and coat them in cinnamon sugar. Then roast the chips for 10-15 minutes in a 350-degree oven until crispy.
FAQ:
How do I store leftovers?
Store any leftovers of the strawberry salsa in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.
Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes! This fruit salsa actually tastes a bit better sitting in the fridge a bit. Allow the flavors to mix for 30 minutes to a day.
How do I pick the best strawberries?
Find ones that are dark, firm, and fragrant. You'll want ripe berries, but not soft ones.
Can I use frozen strawberries?
Sadly this Strawberry Salsa will not work well with frozen berries. They will be too mushy.
Do you use vinegar or lime juice in salsa?
I use lime juice for the most authentic flavor.
