Have you ever picked up a pair of running capris in a nice store and gasped at the price? Quality workout clothes can be expensive and make building a nice running wardrobe on a budget a bit challenging.
The good news is you don’t have to spend a ton of money to have functional nice looking clothes for your next run. Here are my 5 ways to score a deal on workout clothes.
1. Sign Up for Store E-mails
Many of the big name fitness clothes retailers have an e-mail sign up on their website. If you subscribe, they will often send you special coupons or alert you when they are having a sale. If you don’t want all the junk mail cluttering your inbox you can create a separate e-mail account just to give stores. I find that within a week or two of finding something that I want I will get e-mail telling me they are having a sale or with a coupon.
2. Buy at the End of the Season
Try to plan ahead and buy your running clothes off season. Stores start marking down their summer attire mid-summer and it will keep going down in price until early fall. Same idea with winter gear. Start figuring out what you will need for next summer or winter mid and late season and get that item right as the season starts to change. You may have to keep it in a drawer for a few months, but it will still be “new to you” when you pull it out next year. For extra savings watch your e-mail account for an additional percentage off coupon that can be used on already marked down merchandise.
3. Race Day Sales & Coupons
Often local running stores will sell shoes and clothes at races. This is a great place to get a deal and you should still get the help of their running specialists on selection. I also find coupons in my race bags occasionally and that extra discount can make a big difference when shopping and supporting local stores.
4. Shop “Last Season” Stores
Stores like TG Maxx, Marshalls & Ross are perfect for getting workout clothes at an amazing price. They have last season’s trends, but it’s not a big deal at all. Workout clothes trends don’t change as quickly as other clothes, so who cares if you have last year’s shade of blue? They often carry a wide variety of colors, styles and brands. To get an amazing deal wait until the end of the season at one of these retailers and buy off their clearance rack. I have gotten items for $10 or less this way.
5. Know your Box Stores
Some big box stores and department stores known for cheap prices actually have really good workout gear. Target and Old Navy are both go to places to buy. Target actually carries Champion gear. Walmart is also stepping up their game and having more performance gear on their shelves. You may be surprised at the quality of clothes you can get in places that don’t just carry workout clothes.
As you can see, I love a good deal more than anymore. I actually much prefer to buy something I wear at a great price because I don’t feel so guilty spending the money and wearing it. Hopefully following these tips you can score a great deal too!

All of these are great ideas but don't forget some of the great local thrift stores in our area. I volunteer at BRHS thrift store & you'd be surprised how many times we get in new or like new workout clothes. Most end up being $2-$3 each!! I love your blog, Julie.

I find even Target can be quite expensive. Forever 21 started selling workout clothes for cheap and they are great quality! I love Old Navy, and Walmart for sure! TJ Maxx and Marshalls are great places to go, too. Great post!

Target and Old Navy are my go-to stores. I don't think I buy workout gear anywhere else really.

They both have such good stuff. I can even find Target stuff on clearance pretty often.

I love these tips! I have a pretty hard and fast rule that I'll never pay full retail price for workout clothes. I keep the Lulu "We Made Too Much" section of their site bookmarked and check it regularly to snap up anything I like in my size. Eventually, and with patience, I get whatever I really had my eye on. Now, the clothes I get may not be in my original color choice, but I've learned wacky 'sale' colors can be fun!
PS--My Pinterest follow made it into your screenshot above! HA!
