Yes, you're probably not surprised that made my Cilantro Lime Coleslaw with no mayo... adding greek yogurt instead. The healthy swap is the perfect creamy base for this simple dressing that comes together in less than 5 minutes. I also added lime, garlic powder, and a touch of honey to balance the flavors.
I also made this recipe super simple by using bagged coleslaw mix. Sure, you can chop your own but adding a simple bag of pre-chopped cabbage allows you to get this entire recipe on the table (or on your fish tacos) in less than 10 minutes.
I always look for a bag of slaw that has lots of colors! You can often find one with white AND purple cabbage plus shredded carrots. It saves a lot of time and energy to not shred those three ingredients yourself.
Ingredients:
- Bagged Coleslaw: You can find the bagged coleslaw mix in the bagged salad section of a grocery store in the produce section. Look for one that has purple cabbage and carrots in addition to the plain slaw.
- Cilantro: You'll need fresh cilantro to get that classical Cilantro Lime Coleslaw flavor. Remove the hard stems and roughly chop.
- Greek Yogurt: You can use your favorite plain Greek yogurt for this recipe. I make mine with low-fat yogurt, but depending on your diet full fat will also work. It will be creamier. You can also use have mayo and half greek yogurt if you are looking for more of the mayo taste.
- Lime: You'll need about ¼ cup of lime juice to make the dressing which is about the juice from two limes.
- Honey: The honey is optional, but I think it balances out the flavors.
- Garlic Powder: Garlic powder is a great addition to this coleslaw dressing.
- Salt & Pepper:
Can I Make This Without Bagged Slaw?
Yes! If you don't have the bagged coleslaw you can still make this recipe. You'll need about 6-7 cups of chopped cabbage. Use any combination of white, green, red, and carrots.
How to Make Cilantro Lime Slaw:
- To make the Cilantro Lime Slaw you'll first want to make the dressing. Just toss the greek yogurt with the lime juice, honey, garlic powder, and salt and pepper to taste.
- Next, add the coleslaw mix and cilantro in the same bowl.
- Toss until well combined.
- Serve immediately!
Variations & FAQ
- Make It Spicy: Add chopped or sliced jalapeno.
- Make It Sweeter: Add more honey.
- Make It Crunchy: Add some nuts like pepitas or sunflower seeds.
- Make it Smoky: Add some chipotle in adobo sauce.
- Make It Avocado-y: Add AVOCADO!!!
- Make It Veggie: Add extra veggies like finely diced red onion, bell pepper, or even chopped broccoli.
- Make It Vegan: Replace the greek yogurt with vegan yogurt or mayo and use agave nectar instead of honey.
Can I make it ahead of time?
You can (it can keep for 24 hours) but it tastes best fresh. I feel like the greek yogurt doesn't hold up in the fridge as well as mayo does. I also think the cabbage starts to break down some in the fridge. If you want to make it ahead of time I'd make the dressing separately and just toss it with the coleslaw and cilantro when you are ready to serve it.
How do I store the Cilantro Lime Coleslaw?
Store the leftover Cilantro Lime Coleslaw in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. It's not as good as fresh, but it will keep.
Can I freeze Coleslaw?
I don't recommend freezing coleslaw. The cabbage will not hold up to freezing or thawing.
