Crab Cake Sandwiches from scratch?
Yes! Crab Cake Sandwiches from scratch can be made simply and super tasty at home! These simple instructions will get your favorite seafood dinner on the table in less than 30 minutes.
What kind of crab meat do I buy?
There are lots of options for crab meat and it can be hard to know what to buy when making Crab Cake Sandwiches from scratch. I pick lump crab meat for my crab cakes. Jumbo Lump Crab Meat is pretty pricy and I like to put it in crab cocktails or as a garnish on salads. Lump Crab Meat is still large, white, and has lots of flavors. You'll usually find this in the seafood section of your grocery store, not in a can. If you can buy Jumbo Lump Crabmeat, you can but Lump Crabmeat also works great for these.
If you need a more economical option, you can do half Lump Crab Meat and half Backfin or Claw Crab meat.

Here's an overview of what you'll need to make the Crab Cake Sandwich recipe, but make sure to keep scrolling for the complete printable recipe.
For the Crab Cakes:
- Crab Meat: For the Crab Cake Sandwich I like to use Lump Crab Meat which can be found on the refrigerated seafood counter near seafood and fish like fresh salmon. Unless you live near the coast, You'll probably find pasteurized lump crabmeat in small plastic tubs. Drain it and pick over your crab meat to make sure there aren't any shells before you begin cooking with it.
- Egg: One egg holds the crab cakes together. Whisk the egg together before mixing it into the crabmeat.
- Dijon Mustard: Instead of mayo, I like to use a touch of dijon mustard for flavor and moisture in the crab cakes.
- Lemon Juice: A touch of lemon juice brightens up this dish. You can also add a touch of lemon zest.
- Worcestershire Sauce: Rich Worcestershire sauce adds a deep flavor.
- Panko Breadcrumbs: The main focus of the crab patty is crab but I do add a touch of panko bread crumbs to add some texture. You can substitute crushed crackers like ritz or, saltine crackers, or saltines.
- Spices: I use a blend of garlic powder, onion powder, and Old Bay Seasoning, salt, and pepper to season crab cakes! I also add some fresh parsley for color. You can substitute fresh chives too.

For the Greek Yogurt Remoulade:
- Greek Yogurt: Plain greek yogurt is the perfect creamy base for this crab cake sandwich sauce that doesn't have mayo. You can use low of full fat depending on your diet.
- Dijon Mustard: A nice grainy Whole Grain Mustard is a perfect choice.
- Dill Relish: Dill relish adds a lot of texture and flavor!
- Horseradish: You'll need classic prepared horseradish.
- Garlic: I use minced garlic, but you can also use garlic powder.
- Spices: Use my Homemade Cajun Seasoning with some extra Smoked Paprika.

FAQ
Here's some FAQ when it comes to making Crab Cake Sandwiches.
Can I make Crab Cake Sandwiches in advance?
You can prepare most of the parts of the sandwich ahead of time and then just assemble the sandwich when you are ready to make it. Prepare the crab cakes and then store them in the refrigerator. When it's time to eat, you can broil them. You can also prepare the Greek Yogurt Cajun Remolaude, cut the tomato and tear the lettuce.
When you are ready to eat just assemble the sandwich.
How do I store leftovers?
Store any unassembled leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. You can freeze any unused crab cakes for up to two months.
Can I use canned crab meat for making Crab Cake Sandwiches?
I don't recommend it. Shelf-stable crab meat is a completely different taste and consistency from Lump Crab Meat. It's not as rich in flavor either.
Is a crab cake sandwich healthy?
YES, especially my version! Since my crab cakes are broiled and not fried they are actually a healthy treat. One serving of crab cake has nearly 15 grams of protein and only 88 calories. Most seafood sauces can be unhealthy with lots of mayonnaise or butter, but mine is made with guilt-free Greek yogurt for lots of flavor and texture without the fat. This Crab Cake Sandwich tastes super indulgent, but it's not! It's really healthy. For the healthiest burger, pick a whole grain bun. This entire burger comes in under 300 calories!
Variations
I love this Crab Cake Sandwich recipe as written, but here are some fun ideas to mix it up.
- Make Crab Cake Sliders: When making your Crab Cakes, use smaller burgers. Buy slider buns and assemble the sandwiches in the same way.
- Make it Spicy: Add more cayenne pepper to the crab cakes and sauce.
- Make it in the Air Fryer: If you want to use an air fryer, you can cook the crab cakes at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes.
- Make it Gluten Free: Use Gluten-Free Breadcrumbs and Gluten Free Buns.
