Healthy Blueberry Banana Bread
Looking for the best Healthy Blueberry Banana Bread? This is it! This Healthy Banana Bread features the perfect combination of healthy swaps for ingredients plus rich extras to keep the loaf moist, sweet, and delicious. This Healthy Blueberry Banana Bread recipe is simply perfect because it's made with white wheat flour and honey instead of refined sugar. It's moist and DELICIOUS! The swaps leave the bread a bit better for you and just sweet enough. The honey brings a subtle sweetness that's easy to love. It's not over-the-top healthy and dry if you know what I mean!
Some healthy banana bread is dry and flavorless but this one isn't! I swapped white flour for white wheat flour and honey for white sugar BUT kept the melted butter. The result is a quick bread that still tastes good but is only 160 calories a slice.
Healthy Blueberry Banana bread is such an easy thing to make. It's a pretty forging recipe for anyone who wants to try out baking. Even if you aren't much of a baker, it's a great place to start. It's also great to make with kids!
Are bananas and blueberries good together?
YES! They actually pair really well together in this fun twist on banana bread with blueberries. The sweet berries really complement the rich banana. This is an unexpected flavor combination you have to try!
Here's why you'll love this Healthy Blueberry Banana Bread recipe...
- This Healthy Banana Bread recipe uses White Wheat Flour which is 100% whole grain and is rich in fiber and nutrients. This one simple swap ups the nutrition in this bread!
- The bread is also made sweet from bananas! The trick is to use SUPER ripe bananas. You want them spotted and even starting to turn black. Even super-ripe bananas are still rich in potassium, fiber, and antioxidants.
- Blueberries are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C.
- This bread also uses honey instead of plain sugar! Honey is a more natural sweetener choice. Use local honey for allergy health benefits.
- Even with the honey and bananas... this isn't the sugary sweet bread you might pick up from your local bakery... in fact, I think it's better.
- This bread gets rave reviews by anyone who tries it!
Ingredients:
Dry Ingredients:
- White Wheat Flour: I used white wheat flour for this recipe because it is a nice compromise between using hearty and healthier whole wheat flour and soft and tender white flour. White Wheat Flour remains fluffier like white flour but retains many of the nutrients of wheat flour. If you can't find it in the store, buy it here. You can also use white all-purpose flour or regular whole wheat flour but I think the taste and texture are best with White Wheat Flour.
- Baking Powder & Baking Soda: This combination of baking essentials allows the bread to rise properly. Make sure your baking essentials aren't expired, because that could cause the bread not to rise.
- Cinnamon: A healthy dose of cinnamon adds lots of flavor to the Healthy Blueberry Banana Bread.
Wet Ingredients:
- Banana: The best bananas to use for this recipe are ones that have lots of brown spots on them and are softer. The riper the banana, the sweeter your bread will be. To prepare the banana mash it with a fork until it is smooth.
- Eggs: 2 large eggs beaten will bind everything together.
- Honey: Instead of white sugar, I made my banana bread with honey. The flavor is so tasty. You can also use pure maple syrup.
- Butter: There are substitutes for using butter in the bread, but I think this small amount brings a lot of flavor to the loaf while still keeping it reasonably healthy. I melt my butter in the microwave and let it cool just a touch before adding it to my wet ingredients. For an even healthier bread, substitute this butter for greek yogurt.
- Vanilla: Vanilla adds a lot of flavor to the bread. Use a pure vanilla extract for the best results.
What You'll Need:
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray your 9 by 5-inch loaf pan with cooking spray. You can also line the bottom of your pan with parchment paper for easy clean up.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients - flour, baking powder, baking soda, and cinnamon- in a bowl.
- Mix the wet ingredients - mashed banana, eggs, honey, melted butter, and vanilla- in a second bowl. I mix by hand and not with an electric mixer. Don't overmix the bread, as that can make it tough.
- In a large bowl, stir both the flour mixture and the banana mixture together. Carefully fold in your blueberries.
- Pour or spoon the batter into your loaf pan. Bake for 50-60 minutes.
- Allow to cool on a wire rack and then serve.
Variations
I love this Healthy Blueberry Banana Bread as written, but here are some fun variations.
- Add More Fruit: Mix up your fruit by adding other berries like strawberry, blackberry, or raspberry.
- Make it Nutty: Add your favorite nuts like pecans, walnuts, or almonds.
- Make it Chocolate Chip: Add chocolate chips.
- Make it Lemony: Add some lemon zest and lemon juice to the mix for bright addition.
- Make it Vegan or Dairy-Free: Make it vegan by using agave nectar instead of honey and coconut oil instead of butter.
- Make it Gluten-Free: Substitute Gluten Free Flour.
FAQ
Storage & Leftovers
Store any leftovers well covered with foil or in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. For longer storage, keep it in the fridge. Store your Blueberry Banana Bread in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Can I freeze this?
Yes! You can freeze the entire loaf or individual slices. Wrap it tightly in aluminum foil and put in in the freezer. It will store for up to 3 months frozen. Thaw at room temperature and warm in the toaster oven.
Can I use frozen blueberries?
Yes, you can use frozen. I love using those fresh berries in summer but you can get a taste of the season all year long by using frozen blueberries.
Can bananas be too ripe for banana bread?
Not really. If the bananas are actually rotting with mold and fruit flies they are too ripe and not safe to eat, but generally, they are ok! The riper they are the sweeter the bread will be. If you notice rot or mold though... it's a no.
Why is my banana bread dry?
Several things could cause dry banana bread including overmixing the batter. That's why I mix my quick bread by hand. You can also get dry bread by using too much flour. Make sure to measure out this recipe exactly using the scoop and level method.

I made this bread recipe as muffins (short on time) according to your instructions..except used organic white flour (what I had on hand) WOW!! They came out PERFECT! I was making these to bring to someone and I was pleased to place the muffins in a nice container lined with a decorative napkin, So nice to feel good about giving something homemade that I knew was delicious. Thank you for providing the details such as not to overmix!! Another successful recipe!! A KEEPER 🙂

I made this today so easy to put together can't wait till it's done.
Diane says
I'm anxious to try this but I'm wondering if I omit the bananas then how much more blueberries should I add?
JulieWunder says
Hi Diane, Thanks for finding my recipe and leaving the comment. The bananas add sweetness and texture to the bread that you couldn't get from adding extra blueberries. You might be able to try substituting apple sauce but I haven't tried it yet so I can't promise it will work.
Good luck!
Julie

What’s the difference between white whole wheat flour and brown whole wheat flour? And what would be the conversion if I used almond flour instead?
JulieWunder says
You can sub them equally! I just like the texture of the white wheat flour for this but they both will work!
Lisa Ballantyne says
I absolutely love blueberry muffins and banana bread, so this is one I've gotta try!

Yum! I'd just swap regular flour out for the whole wheat stuff to finish the bag and this sounds like a winner and beyond easy recipe.
Lori says
Hey Julie, This sounds wonderful, do you think it would work with a sub of Almond Flour to make it gluten free?
