I can’t believe Memorial Day has come and gone. You know… that means summer is “unofficially” here. I like to think that summer begins at the “unofficial” start on Memorial Day weekend and ends on the “official” end in mid-September when the calendar technically says Fall. In my mind summer is longer that way. And I love summer... evenings that stay balmy through dusk, beach trips and fireflies… Awwww…. tis a great time of the year.
For me, Summer also means spending lots of time outside and having easy ways to eat healthy. It’s a time of year where we spend a lot of time with the family. That’s the perfect combination for bringing together your relatives for some good ole healthy livin’.
Think about it… Swimming, hiking, biking and after dinner strolls are all active and healthy ways to be together as a family. Grilling and a constant stream of fresh vegetables from the garden make eating well a snap in summer. You don't have to run a marathon to stay fit, you just have to keep moving.
How do you stay active and healthy as a family?

- Make an outdoor game a friendly competition- 100 yard dash anyone? T-ball in the yard?
- Plan something together other than eating out – Instead of using your weekly “date” time for a meal, plan an outdoor active activity like running a race.
- Do exercise video together- Wii dance anyone? My nephew is awesome at this.
- Grilling healthy food? Throw on as many veggies as meat – Summer is the perfect time to take the fat out of cooking
- Put on the music and just dance!!! – Have a dance party together. Everyone will probably laugh 100’s of calories off.
- Put down the phones and electronics – Have a “tech” free day where you focus on planning fun, active and healthy activities
Alright, your turn! Don’t forget to leave a comment in the comment section below and tell me how your family stays healthy and active! You have until a week from Sunday to enter.

Well, it's just me and my dog so that's all the "family" at my house. (I know it said family but just felt like posting.) Pattie (my dog) and I either run or walk everyday. I take a yoga class at 5:15 Wednesday mornings with 2 other girls at a ladies home that used to work in the school system. I often times hang out in my friends neighborhood where everyone is outside...ALL THE TIME!In the winter, we just start the fire early afternoon. Kids are running around, adults are sometimes sitting but often times playing games with the kids, taking walks down to the field, playing volleyball in the yard, and Pattie has the ball thrown for her until I think she's going to fall over! Sometimes we even take the path over to the neighborhood instead of driving. I typcially run with 2 of those girls 3-4 times a week. It's weird that I'm more active now then when I lived in the mountains! I do miss running on the trails though...and the cooler weather!

I have a 7 month old son so we do alot of walking and playing. He loves to get strapped on with hours moby wrap and go walking round the pond near our house. We walk at least 2 miles a day and sometimes try to do more. We eat whole foods and try to keep our diet clean. My son eats mostly what we eat but I also make some of his food.
Abby Bates says
I am sorry, I did not finish my above post - it published before I was ready to post it.......
I mainly try to eat a raw food diet of whole fruits and veggies ( I don't like to cook if I don't have to ) and healthy proteins with as few additives as possible. Also lots of water throughout the day. Also am trying to eliminate Gluten. I am perhaps 75 to 80% GF.
I do allow myself treats and things I like from time to time and by doing this I have lost 6lbs since March and 16lbs since Christmas!!!

For our family, the key to being more healthy and fit is to have fun, laugh alot, not only is it good exercise, but if you are happy, you want to take better care of yourself by exercising and eating right. Also I have gotten my grandbabies to put the chips and cookies aside so they can 'have' carrots with ranch dip.
Karrie Kirkland says

I come from a family of avid runners but can't personally run due to a knee problem. So together, we hike at DuPont with our dogs and I'm the biggest support crew at their races. We try to eat "clean" and our diet consists of mostly lean protein and vegetables with very little sugar or starches. My children and husband surprised me with four laying hens for Mother's Day so that I have fresh organic eggs! Happy Summer!
Leslie Barnhill says
Summer means more walks with the three dogs in the early morning or later evening! They end up sleeping more in the summer
Dan Steadman says
How we stay fit and active? Well I run like crazy, but the rest of us do yard work, this time of year means I mow, take debris to the landfill, my wife and sons (the 9 and 4 y/o) help in the garden (I have three boys 9,4,2 and chasing them keeps us active) we have a bin outside with soccer balls and other balls and the boys LOVE playing soccer and we have a swingset, trampoline for them to play on (they love to jump) and the oldest two have scooters they ride, occasionally in the front yard a soccer game will break out!
