Homemade Italian Spice Mix is the perfect blend of dried herbs and spices to keep to your pantry or spice cabinet. Make this Italian Seasoning Blend and put it in your favorite pasta sauce, soup, salad dressing, or even roasted vegetables!
Homemade Italian Spice Mix
Making your own homemade Italian Spice Mix is surprisingly simple! It takes just a few minutes to find the spices and mix together your own seasoning blend. The best part about this is you control the Italian dried herbs and can add a little more or less of your favorites. This blend of oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary, sage, and marjoram will have all your favorite Italian dishes POP at the dinner table.
You'll love having this in your cabinet at dinner time because it keeps you from having to pull out so many individual spices!
This entire recipe comes together in minutes and goes great on SO many recipes. You'll be shocked at how often you use it and I promise you'll make it again and again.
Who Makes the Best Italian Seasoning?
SURE, you can BUY Italian Spice Mix or Italian Seasoning BUT I dare say the BEST Italian Seasoning Blend comes when you make your own. When you make your own you know exactly what's in it, which is a win in my book. My recipe has the perfect combination of classic Italian flavors like basil and oregano with some other fun flavors. You can even add a bit of a punch to your own seasoning by adding some red pepper flakes.
This Italian Seasoning is a spice-only mixture. Some Italian Spices include salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, or even red pepper flakes! You can easily add that to this mixture, but I decided to keep the recipe spices only for those who prefer to control their salt. I'll add my spice mix to my Italian dishes with a touch of classic garlic salt on the side.
I love making my own herb blends and have shared my Mexican Spice Mix and Homemade Everything But the Bagel Seasoning Blend with you!
Italian Spice Mix Ingredients:
- Dried Oregano: Oregano is aromatic with hints of grass and mint. It's popular in Italian, Mediterranean, and Mexican dishes.
- Dried Basil: Dried basil has a minty flavor with notes of anise. It's my favorite spice, so my spice blend is heavy on basil.
- Dried Thyme: Dried thyme as a bold earthy aroma of mint and lemon.
- Dried Rosemary: Dried Rosemary is filled with a very strong pine flavor.
- Dried Marjoram: Dried Marjoram is similar to oregano but has a lighter, sweeter, and more delicate flavor.
- Dried Sage: Dried Sage has a deep, piney, and woody flavor.
Other Additions:
You can serve this as is and add salt and pepper on the side OR make this recipe a complete seasoning blend by adding some of these!
- Salt
- Pepper
- Garlic Salt
- Garlic Powder
- Crushed Red Pepper Flakes - This is a great addition if you want it a bit spicier! Tastes great with pizza.
Where do I get these spices?
The spices for my Italian Spice Mix are very common and should be in any grocery store. You can also buy them online with the links below.
How to Make Italian Spice Blend:
It's so easy and fast to make your own Italian Spice Blend!
- Get out your oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary, marjoram, and sage.
- Measure out your spices and put them in an airtight container.
- Mix well!
You can also make this into a ground spice mix by putting all the ingredients in a blender or spice grinder and mixing until smooth.
How do I store homemade spice mixes?
You can store your homemade spice mixes in an airtight container or jar. It's important to keep moisture away from them. I like keeping mine in small mason jars like this one.
This seasoning blend will keep in your pantry for as long as the shelf life of the spices you put in the mix.... usually 6-12 months. Make a bunch and keep it to use for a while!
What is a good substitute for Italian Seasoning?
This recipe is pretty fool-proof! You can adjust the quantities or skip an ingredient if you don't have one and it will still taste good.
Ways to Use Homemade Italian Spice Blend:
There are endless possibilities to use this Italian Spice Blend in your cooking. Any dish that is Italian, Greek or Meditteranean-inspired will pop after adding these spices. My favorite thing to do is to add spices to any pizza, but here are some other tasty ideas.
- Pasta Sauce
- Tomato Basil Soup
- Lasagna Soup
- Homemade Lasagna
- Hearty Vegetable Soup

It's so fun to make your own spice mixes, especially because you can really customize them. If you're not crazy about a certain flavor you can dial it back and sub in something else that you love.
