Marco Island Shelling
Marco Island Shelling is spectacular. It's a paradise for shell lovers who are seeking pretty and unique shells to add to their collection. It's even home to the rare and coveted Junonia shell!
While not as well known as Sanibel Island for shelling, this southwest Florida island just off the coast of Naples is still filled with gorgeous and unique shells that make this island another popular shelling destination. It's a gem of a place to visit for beachcombers and shell lovers, like myself. I've been to both locations several times, and I can honestly say I found just as many great shells on Marco Island as Sanibel.
Marco Island is a gem of a travel destination with sun-drenched white beaches, gorgeous boating opportunities, cute shopping, and amazing restaurants. The fact that it's also a fabulous shelling location is just icing on the cake! Are you planning a trip to the island? Marco Island Shells
Marco Island Shells and shelling are pretty special because of the sheer abundance of seashells. Some beaches are just sandy, but Marco Island is filled with shells. Short of Sanibel Island, it's one of the best places I've ever seen for shelling and beachcombing. It's a shell collectors dream.
Is there good shelling on Marco Island?
Yes! There is great shelling on Marco Island because of how the island is situated between the Gulf of Mexico and the mainland of Florida. Because there is a gentle slope into the waters that extends to the Keys, many beaches along the SW coast of Flora have good shells. Here are some of the ones you can expect to find. I found all of these on my trips.
10 Popular Shells Found on Marco Island
- Florida Fighting Conch

Consider getting a Florida Gulf Coast Shell Guide before you go so you can identify your shells.
Best Marco Island Shelling Beaches
Marco Island's main beach sweeps the entire west side of the island and goes on for nearly 6 miles. Most of it has pockets of wonderful shells that pile up on the beach, depending on the tides and weather. It's all a great shelling beach.
Most of the beaches don't have public beach access though. If you are staying on the beach, you can shell the entire beach easily, but if you are driving in from and not staying on the island there are only two public beach access points. Luckily both of them are great shelling beaches too.
Public Marco Island Shelling Beaches
- South Beach Marco Island: Pictured below, this beach is at the southern tip of Marco Island and has a great spot for shelling. If you turn left there is a cool rock wall that collects shells.
- Tigertail Beach: An interesting and pristine beach on the North side of the island. It was just a sand bar until 2005 when Hurricane Wilma moved the sand around enough to connect it to the mainland. It has a beach park connected to the island and lagoon you can cross to an undeveloped beach on the other side. It's an interesting place just to see and a great shelling location.
Marco Island Shelling Tours
Because shelling is so popular on Marco Island, many companies offer shelling tours. I don't think you need one to explore Marco Island itself, but it is totally worth it to take one that brings you to one of the many undeveloped islands off the coast of Marco Island. Barrier islands like Kice Island, Dickmans Island, and other hidden gems in the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge are ideal places for finding tons of unique shells.
We took the entire family, including two four-year-olds, on one of the tours and had a wonderful time. Our boys still talk about it! The first tour is the one we did, which I highly recommend as a best shelling tour. The others are the top-rated Marco Island Shelling Tours on the island. It leaves from Goodland Boat Park. If you are looking for a unique or special family outing for your trip, this is it!

5 Marco Island Shelling Tips and Tricks
Go At Prime Shelling Time
There are always good shells on Marco Island, but there are some times to go shelling that are better for finding those prized shells. Consider going in their off-season which is the fall and early winter. With fewer crowds, you can find better shells.
Low tide is also the best time to look because the water recedes and exposes more shells.
Also, consider going to the beach after a storm (or even hurricane) because they can push even more rare shells onto the beach. Do exercise caution with this though, and keep your safety first.
Consider a Shelling Boat Tour
I don't often think you need a shelling tour or shelling excursion to do shelling, but Marco Island is a great place to consider cooking one.
Marco Island is surrounded by thousands of little islands, called the 10,000 Island National Wildlife Refuge, that are spectacular for shelling. So unlike other shelling locations, it can be worth it to take a shelling tour and go out to some of this uninhabited island. Consider taking one of the boat tours I listed above to get access to these wonderful shells in such a natural habitat. If you tell them you are a shell fan, they can help find some special ones.
Plus, the boat ride out to the islands is simply magical and you'll most likely see dolphins and sea turtles too. It's such a great shelling experience.
Get Shelling Gear
Here are some other Sanibel shelling items I recommend.
- Florida Gulf Coast Shelling Pamphlet <--- Allowed us to identify our shells.
- Sand Dipper
- Sand Dipper Jr.
- Round Beach Mesh Bag
- Sand Dipper Treasure Digger Sifter <---This allowed us to dig right at the water's edge and sift out the sand to find some amazing treasures.
- Sunscreen
- Beach or Water Shoes <--- In some areas you want to wear shoes or be wearing some sort of footwear so you don't get cut by the shells.
Dig for Shells
Depending on where you are and the tides, you can sometimes use a sand sifter to dig for shells. I've found some cool smaller shells that way and it's fun to check and see what you might be missing.
Don't Take Them All
As tempting as it is when you see all of the cool shells, you can't take them all. Turn the shells over and make sure they don't still have live animals in them. It's necessary to give any shell you find especially closed ones, a good look to see if an animal or inhabitant is still inside. I've found so many shells with animals still inside. If it is, it's only right to leave it plus it's illegal on the island to take a live shell. Collecting live shells is prohibited and leaving them behind is the right thing to do.
Also, leave some shells behind for other people. Take enough for your collection and leave behind what you really don't want.
Marco Island Shelling is Amazing
Marco Island Shelling is truly world-class! If you love the beach comb and find beach treasures, this is a must-stop location on your tour of Flordia. And being that it's only an hour from Sanibel, which is the shelling capital of the US, it's worth taking the time to visit both beloved locations for shelling. Don't forget to also check out my Sanibel Shelling Guide: Where and How to Find the Best Ones.
If you visit, I'd love to hear all of the shells you found on your adventures.
How to Clean Marco Island Shells
So how do you clean them to get them home?
- Put the shells in a colander and then fill a large bowl with water.
- Put the shells in the colander and then change the water several times allowing them to soak overnight. Putting the shells in the colander allowed any of the sand that was still inside to fall out.
- Rinse the shells once with soapy water.
- Transfer the shells to a freshwater bath with just a splash of bleach. Let that sit for just a short 10 minutes and then rinse them off.
- Now your shells are clean and not smelly to take home.
