I took a little unplanned break from running on vacation in Turks and Caicos. I packed all my running stuff and fully intended to run outside or at least at the hotel gym. I actually normally enjoy running on vacation and use it as a new way to explore new places.
I got to the island and all my running plans just sort of evaporated in the blazing sun. It was so hot and humid and the beach was so very pretty, I quickly got sucked into lazy vacationer mode. I briefly considered running along the beach because I saw many people running barefoot along the packed sand first thing in the morning, but I knew my ankles couldn’t handle it.
I took long walks along the beach instead. And tried stand up paddle boarding. That counts as some exercise, right?
I came back to Asheville missing running, excited to embrace spring! It’s been a long cold winter in the mountains and spring and fall are running sweet spots. As soon as I could, I laced up my shoes, pulled out my spring running gear and put in some miles.
Just those few missed runs, made me appreciate running even more. I know I focus a lot of my running posts on setting a time goal or racing, but the beauty of running to me is often in my everyday miles that clear my head or makes me feel so energized and joyful.
My little life problems seem much more manageable and that to-do list seems a little attainable after a solid 3 miler. And running during the seasons changing makes me appreciate the beauty in the world even more.
On my Saturday morning four miler a little butterfly started flying around me near the beginning of my run. He flew out ahead of me, following my path, almost begging me to chase him for almost a quarter of a mile. It was one of those moments that made me so grateful to just be able to run. I knew that this was exactly what I was supposed to be doing at that very moment.
Spring running has a certain flare and magic. I may come home sneezing, with watery eyes from all the pollen, but I wouldn’t trade those flowers for anything. They remind you of just how beautiful living can truly be.
Your turn….
What’s your favorite season?
Do you enjoy every day running or racing more?

One of the most enjoyable runs I ever had was just racing a friend down the beach-no timing no finish line. Just for the exuberance. Sorry if you missed that.

I'm glad you enjoyed your run so much! My beach was on a pretty steep incline and I knew I would mess up my ankles. Next time I'm at a flatter beach, I'll try it!
